As Seen On TV?

File under:  Medical Scrubs

I have to admit – I love Grey’s Anatomy. The guilty pleasure center buried in my brain that got me addicted to Days of Our Lives during college is attracted by the soapy plots and the nobody-talks-like-that witty banter, so the show – with its venus-flytrap-like low cunning – has reeled me in. Not that I admit it in public.

My wife, on the other hand, is the sort of tough-as-nails RN who scoffs at an intern or resident accomplishing anything useful as the most dreamy-eyed of fictions. She watches GA with me under severe duress, and points out the constant string of inaccurate terminology, treatments that are less than best practice. More frustratingly, she solves the medical mysteries of each episode with about an 80% success rate. But the most common complaint she levels at the show is that showrunner Shonda Rhimes seems to have no clue about medical scrubs. Although Barco now has its own Grey’s-branded scrubs modeled on the show’s apparel, and Katherine ‘Izzy’ Heigl has her own haute couture line of scrubs, she’s confident that the cut of the TV scrubs just isn’t right – that nobody looks that curvy in a real pair of scrubs. She’s right, too – Rhimes and exec producer Betsy Beers openly admitted in a podcast that the Seattle Grace scrubwear is specially made to play up the McDreaminess of the cast.
